How To Deal With Cops, Feds & Other Law Enforcement Personnel

A Guide By a Father And Defense Attorney for People of Color

  1.  Do not look a cop in the eye.
  2. Remember if it's your word against a cop, you lose. It doesn't matter what actually happened. If a cop or fed wants to get you, they'll get you. Don't ever think, "I'm clean and they got nothing." You're not, and they do (or will).
  3. Judges will bend over backwards to justify, support, or believe a cop. Provided you are still alive, be sure to humbly thank the officer who arrested you in court - this will do wonders at sentencing.
  4. Do not ever do anything to make yourself memorable to a cop.
  5. Do not wear hoodies, flashy jewelry, or baggy pants. These will get you shot. Stay tuned as this list will frequently be updated with no advance notice. EDIT: You might want to think twice about getting a tattoo.
  6. Remember some authority figures are really just police agents. They simply call the cops instead of trying to deal with a situation like an adult. But keep respecting them...be the adult if you have to.
  7. Do not be, act, or allow yourself to be perceived as "uppity." This applies to words and actions. When you exercise your right of free speech, temper it down. Add conciliatory language.
  8. Always keep your hands where they can be seen.
  9. Remember, the combination of being underpaid and overpowered is a recipe for abuse.
  10. Do not fall into the culture of contempt for authority figures. "F tha police" will get you shot.
  11. The Second Amendment does not apply to you. If you have a firearm, legal or not, you must expect to get shot. No one will support your right to bear arms.
  12. Keep a smartphone charged with an app to automatically upload video to the cloud at every traffic stop. This will not stop you from getting shot, and will not bring a perp to justice, but with enough videos, you can be a part of history.
  13. Please ensure your tags are up to date, and you drive carefully. Traffic violations can get you shot.
  14. There is a widespread belief that "punishment should fit the crime." You need not concern yourself with this belief.
  15. To be continued...

And this keeps happening. Where are all the Second Amendment supporters rallying behind #PhilandoCastile? He had a lawful firearm. While the family of #AltonSterling was still in shock.

Enough is enough. Enforcement of the law does not raise one above the law, and it's time to stop pretending. It is about race. There is a systemic problem.
